Sandra Graham artist
Sandra works from her studio in The Wyre Forest, UK. She received a B.A. (Hons) Degree in Painting and History of Art and Design at the University of Wolverhampton in 1995. She is a qualified art lecturer and also led several community arts projects focussing upon mental health.
Her work endeavours to convey the physical, sensuous experience of her journeys through the surrounding landscape where she lives in the Wyre Forest and also of her travels around the UK particularly Scotland and Wales.
Nature has long been acknowledged and accepted for what it has to offer in the way of healing and beauty. Connecting with nature is associated with increased feelings of calmness, joy and hope. Her work attempts to share this experience of the landscape to encourage us to consider what we now have and undoubtedly must protect.
She gathers visual references, sketches and photographs before committing the experience to memory.
“I have always enjoyed using a variety of materials but my main medium is oil paint. I love its material tactile qualities and its ability to be manipulated in so many ways.
I work intuitively, and love creating harmony out of chaos. Using palette knives, trowels, in fact anything that makes a relevant mark, I may flick and throw paint in the attempt to communicate the landscape therefore the chance accident is an important factor in the finished painting.”
Sandra exhibits widely her works are held in both public and private collections both at home and abroad.
“Over the years my work has been influenced by English Romanticism, in particular, Turner. Other influences are Jackson Pollock, Anselm Kiefer and Joan Eardley.”
